SPIRIT QUEST
Softly stepping upon moss-laden ground,
I tread silently so as not to make a sound ~
Cool forest light filters to touch my face,
And I am at peace within this place ~
The forest voices tell me, I am always seen,
Where I am now, where I will go, and where I have been ~
The spirit of Cougar and Wolf and Bear
Walk with me as guides, I feel them quite near ~
Their powerful presence accompanies me in my quest,
In the forests of my ancestors, where my soul is at rest ~
THE HIDDEN PLACE (Vancouver Island)
Deep inside the confines of my wilderness heart,
Nature plays a sacred part ~
Coastal creatures scurry across forest floor,
As Ocean waves flurry to stony shore ~
Salt-spray falls upon evergreen leaves,
And driftwood gathers upon the beach;
Textured bark and smooth-rounded stones,
Form the fragile fabric of my island home ~

SKY GUARDIAN (The Eagle)
Deep inside the sky, where the Eagle resides,
My soul connects with him, as he regally glides ~
Higher than summit of mountain or Moon,
We summon the cloud, that the storm will come soon ~
Rainfall to quench the salmon-swelled lakes,
Thunder to threaten the Wolf as it takes,
More than its due, or that Nature can spare;
No mercy for creatures, that take more than their share ~
The Eagle is protector of beast and of Man,
Guardian of ocean, sky, lake and land ~

WILDERNESS, CANADA
Rugged mountain-trails fall to the foaming water's edge;
Where thirsty roaming Elk, bow their noble heads ~
The Black Bear, nose raised to inhale the scent of prey,
Seeks salmon beneath sweet water-fall spray ~
This wilderness seduces me
With its stunning, frozen majesty ~
Glacial rivers and icy mountain lakes,
My ancient, beloved Canada, makes ~
CANADA DREAMING

And speaks the essence

THE VOYAGE NORTH
Plying wave and swell
The summer sea-foam parts,
As the ferry carves
Its "Inside Passage" course ~
Orca and Dolphin dance
In sweeping Arctic circles,
Leaping both to starboard
And to port ~
I am enchanted as I listen
To their oceanic orchestrations,
I am "Whale" and I am "Dolphin"
In my thoughts ~
I follow in the wake
Of their mysterious migration,
I am entranced and
In their curious spell, am caught ~
Forested island sanctuaries
Of Otter, Wolf and Bear,
Drift mutely past me
As we veer towards the North ~
This journey that I take
Along the BC coastal line,
Is a voyage I'll make
Forever, in my mind ~
SALMON CHASER
(The Warrior Eagle)
A hunter from the sky
Carves an arc against the Sun;
His ancient, soulful cry,
Companion to the wind ~
He swoops deep into a gorge
As he sweeps the pouring spray,
Of a water-fall that forged
A path of spawning prey ~
The Salmon now appear
Beneath his predatory eye;
To feed a hunger that is rare
For the hunter from the sky ~

AWARE (The legacy)
The Chieftain of the Orca
In migration, plots the course;
In search of warmer waters,
His mighty Nation ventures North ~
He seeks the spawning Salmon
And the shelter of the Sound;
He swims in search of safety,
Where the storms are seldom found ~
The Spirit of the Orca
Transcends the mind of Man;
He is translator of the waters,
And navigator of the sands ~
We have much to learn from him,
He has so much to share ;
If we could "respect", return to him,
His touch would leave us all aware ~

GLORIOUS
On the steps of "Heaven's Stairway"
At her highest granite crest,
Is the site of Kern's great aerie,
A magnificent raptor's nest ~
Swallowed in a swathe of cloud
and damp enfolding mist,
the eagle "Kern" alights in shrouds
of vapoured edifice ~
His vigilant obsession,
to scour these mountain skies,
With unspeakable aggression
and the power he applies ~
And when quarry once is sighted
He launches at the earth,
His talons cruelly mitred
as they pierce the salmon's girth ~
The Gods themselves have sanctioned
this despicable display;
Who could have otherwise imagined
Death so gloriously arrayed?

FOREST GUARDIAN
Wilderness voices rise on the wind
And a symphony of sweet swelling sound begins;
The spirit of Winter finally transcends,
As the chorus of Summer gently descends ~
Upon the harmonic echoes of geese and of fowl
Contrasting with black bear's deep-throated growl;
The soul-searching call of a wolf on the prowl
Surpasses the soprano ascent of its howl ~
Marmot and ermine forage and hide
As an eagle above them regally glides ~
The forest brings safety to those who reside,
Deep in the sanctuary it nobly provides ~
Cedar and Maple cast their scent on the breeze
Summoning all with supernatural ease;
Nature cherishing each wilderness cry,
Assigns the Guardian with her vigilant eye ~
